Learn the music – then forget it!

I’m increasingly learning the value of the ‘no music on stage’ rule and how much it increases energetic interaction with ‘the room’. Recently I was reminded of of this great challenge from jazz music legend Charlie Parker:

You’ve got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail.
